Course Overview
The Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies (AAIPSDS) has initiated a short-term course on Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) in West Africa. The course intends to provide a platform for training that would build the capacities of relevant stakeholders in the security sector and civil society with a view to providing a core skilled, effective and efficient staff who will in turn enhance the capacities of their corporate organizations in tackling the problems posed by Small Arms & Light Weapons in West Africa.
The rapid accumulation of arms and light weapons has led to increased insecurity and destabilization of the African region. It has contributed to the outbreak of armed conflict and in addition, intensifies and prolongs conflict and violence within and across national borders. It is against this background that the need arose for the adoption of a comprehensive and holistic approach in dealing with the problem within the West African Sub-region. Improving security at the national and sub-regional levels is an important pre-condition for sustainable development. Therefore, the Executive short-term course on Small Arms and Light Weapons in West Africa (SALW) will fill a lacuna on educational studies in this field within the West African Sub-region
