Course Overview
The Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies (AAIPSDS) have designed an Executive Course in Women, Peace, and Security. This course aims to enhance the understanding of the gendered politics of conflict, national security, and peacebuilding, and also provide training on the facilitation of women’s participation as agents of peacebuilding and prevention of conflict, violent extremism, gender-based violence, and insecurity. This course will explore the normative global, regional, and national frameworks on women’s participation in conflict prevention, governance, peace negotiations, peacekeeping missions, and conflict resolution mechanisms and their attendant challenges with respect to implementation. This course will draw on diverse interdisciplinary perspectives from theory, policy, and practice.
Course Objectives
The overall objective of the course is to provide participants with a ground understanding of the Peace and Security Agenda and its application to the specific national context of Nigeria. However, the specific objectives of the course are as follows:
- Provide sound knowledge on the cause and triggers of violent conflicts in Nigeria.
- Identify critical factors hindering the active engagement of women in peacebuilding activities in Nigeria.
- Develop practical skills in conflict analysis and resolution.
- Build the capacity of women to develop cultural friendly strategies for engagement in peacebuilding at the community level.
- Improve opportunities for women to attain higher positions in international, regional, and national organizations.
