Course Description
This one-week course in Disaster and Humanitarian Emergency Management will be delivered on a modular basis. lt will also provide enhanced training and engagement with widely used policy and practitioner analytical tools and models, enabling you to develop your skills and employability. The course will be intensely interactive and will be delivered by way of teaching and lectures, seminar presentations, problem solving and simulation sessions, tutorials and field visits. Digital learning materials such as power point presentations will also be used for teaching. Students will be encouraged to use the library facilities locally and those elsewhere that are relevant to the course. It is composed often overarching modules:
Course Overview
Over the past five decades, the number of people affected globally by disasters has increased by an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 per decade, with 250 million affected every year. African countries are the most vulnerable to natural disasters largely as a result of their fragile nature. Each disaster or emergency is different and so is each humanitarian relief operation. Hence, understanding the dynamics of a disaster and all the actors involved is essential to providing adequate assistance to the affected population and government.
The Abdusalami Abubakar lnstitute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies has designed a professional course in Disaster Risk and Humanitarian Management to prepare individuals to recognize and analyze emerging challenges in the humanitarian field. This course focuses on understanding the dynamics of disaster and complex emergencies as well as providing a solid foundation on the ethical and professional principles that guide humanitarian response to conflict and disaster. Participants will learn the legal and historical frameworks that shaped these principles as well as test their applicability to the challenges faced by humanitarian actors today.
Course Objectives
The overall objective of the course is to equip students with the appropriate effective tools, skills and knowledge in disaster risk and humanitarian management. However, the specific objectives of the course are as follows:
- To gain a deep understanding on the concepts and characteristics of natural disasters and complex emergencies.
- To explore the key components of the international humanitarian and disaster response laws.
- To gain insight on the implications of conflict and emergencies for gender roles and potential risks in the light of human rights and human security.
- To identify the different types and levels of humanitarian coordination
- To explore the complexities and diversity of human displacement
- To articulate and apply analytical tools for planning and designing humanitarian programmes.
- To explore the different contexts of humanitarian challenges in Africa.
- To identify key roles, mandates and response mechanisms of international, regional and local actors within the different scenarios.
Intended Audience
The course is intended for professionals involved in humanitarian action, who have field experience and hold positions of responsibility in humanitarian operations. It is also designed for those working or intending to work in security related areas and whose work is associated with development practice or those interested in these fields. Also, the course would be of interest to individuals wishing to enhance their knowledge and skills and move up the career ladder or make a career transition. This course will help to provide an academic context, qualification, core competencies and practical skills that would match their work experience in these fields. Duration
