Abdulsalami Abubakar Institute for Peace and Sustainable Development Studies (AAIPSDS) is an independent, non-partisan Institute dedicated to revitalizing the studies and practice of peace and human security in Africa. The Institute was established in 2002 by His Excellency Gen. Abdulsalami A. Abubakar GCFR, CSG shortly after he left office as the Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 1999.
The Institute's strategic and academic programs aim to resolve the myriad of conflicts through the adoption of various mechanisms that will advance peace and human security in Africa. These programs will help to develop human capacities, shape government policies, counter and prevent violent extremism, promote governance/democratic transitions and the overall development of a peaceful society.
Our programmes offer an opportunity to experience one of Africa’s leading centres for peace and development studies. We have a dynamic community of peace practitioners, faculty, staff and visiting scholars from different parts of the country and continent who participate in a vibrant exchange of ideas through simulations, discussions, lectures, special events, conferences, meetings and other experiences.

The Institute was established in response to the need for innovative, effective, and efficient afro-centric conflict transformation and development methodologies. Thus, the core philosophy of the Institute is succinctly encapsulated in the words of the late former United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Kofi Annan which states that ``the prevention of conflict begins and ends with the promotion of human security and human development.
